Married ??? Jones, and then an Albert Edward Burnet (1874 -). Jones died in prison according to Elizabeth’s sister - but oddly there seems to be no clear record of this or even any certainty on his given name, nor a conclusive 1901 census record for him.

There is evidence of marriage banns for a Henry Percy Jones in 1900 but no official record. Elizabeth appeared in 1901 census as Mrs Jones, but no Henry. Henry was apparently living 2 doors down from Elizabeth in 1881 as adopted son of Baughan family in Oxford, which put his date of birth as 1868.

The only birth I could find that matched this was in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. A quick look at censuses and he may have been son of a Surgeon, so presumably well-to-do.

Also, possible match for them in 1901 Headington - probably not them, though (needs checking out to eliminate).

The second marriage was 28 July 1905 Register Office Paddington.

According to another person investigating:

For some years I have been looking for the 1st marriage of Elizabeth Mary Higgins [born 6 June 1877 St Clements Oxford daughter of. Alfred HIGGINS, basket maker]

Here are the facts

Elizabeth's sister said that she was 1st married to a man named Jones & that he died in prison,

On her 2nd marriage certificate it states Elizabeth Mary Jones widow,

Entry in the Banns Book Clapham Parish Church 1900, entry No 63 Henry Percy Jones B & Elizabeth Mary Higgins S Both of this parish called 12 Aug, 19 Aug 26 Aug by R B Littlewood Rector [marriage not found]

Not in Free BMD

I have checked the original page, the couple who bans were before & after Elizabeth & Percy bans, marriage are there.

In the 1901 census, 31 March, Elizabeth was living on her own in London as Mrs JONES, married (RG 13/ 464 7 the Polygon. Clapham & Battersea, Holy Trinity, London.) Age 24, no Mr JONES, [may have been in prison?]

Her sister Florence [my gran] was living with her & working in London in about 1901 possibly after the imprisonment & death of Mr Jones,

I have a photo aunt Bess in mourning dress, wearing two rings she is with her sister Florence, is marked "DAY & Electric Light Studio's F W Wood 347 & 349 Edgware Rd W & 22 Bishops Rd W" F W Wood was there from 1899 -1908.It may have been taken on Florence 21 Birthday on the 16.8.1901 ?

She was married 2nd time 28 July 1905 Registry Office Paddington, London.

Could it be that the Vicar didn't send the marriage to the General Register Office? And where was Henry Percy Jones in 1901 was he in prison? & when & where did he die

This is a mystery I have been trying to solve for some years. What crime did he commit to end up in prison? Was it for bigamy?

I found a Henry Percy Jones " Imprisonment. Henry Percy Jones Date of Trial: 29 Jun 1891 Trial Year: 1891 Location of Trial: Oxfordshire, Sentence: Imprisonment", I also have newspaper cutting about this, Henry Percy Jones home was in in Oxford was two streets away from where my Aunt Bess lived as a girl.

Henry P J wasn't with BAUGHAN, Rebecca in 1871, I have a copy of 5 1871 census for Henry Jones in Oxford.

I posted a message asking for help on H P Jones I received a lot of info on possible birth but not where he was in 1901

census unless he was in prison as Henry Jones, there were a few, there is s death of a Jones Henry Percy 30 Plymouth in 1901

I have been in contact with someone who has a H P Jones in his tree he has his marriage & birth, I am waiting for info in his trade, death & where he was in 1901. I also have a copy of a Henry Percy Jones marriage in London to Eliza Upsdell in 1901

he was P O Royal Navy. Another puzzle to be solved.
