Baptism record shows George’s parents to be Robert and Mary Anne Portch. George was born in Dublin at the Aldboro Barracks in Dublin. The baptism image attached was an evidence of age dated 16th June 1875, but taken from the original parish register.

Joined the army aged 20 years and 6 months in December 1915. He was 6 ft 1 ins with 34 in chest, 133 lb, and required spectacles. His next of kin was a Josie or Jessie Gale, his foster mother of 58 Peacock Street, Newington Butts. The marriage record for Jessie and James Gale shows her maiden name to be Wheeler, in 1876. His birth mother’s maiden name was Bugden according to his birth record.

Laurie shared his middle name with his grandfather on his mother’s side, George Seguin Portch. A search on FMP reveals only one marriage between a Seguin and a Portch and that was 15th April 1798 between Martha Seguin and Robert Portch in London — perhaps an ancestor
