Detailed baptism record shows Robert was born at No. 32 Addington Place, Camberwell and that his mother Elizabeth’s father was Richard Watler of Stanstead in Kent, a farmer. Also that Robert’s father Robert was a tin plate worker.

Joined the army on 5th October 1857 and served 20+ years, including 6+ in Canada where presumably he met his future wife

Laurie shared his middle name with his grandfather on his mother’s side, George Seguin Portch. A search on FMP reveals only one marriage between a Seguin and a Portch and that was 15th April 1798 between Martha Seguin and Robert Portch in London — perhaps an ancestor
