Obituary:

DEATH OF MR. THOMAS LASBURY, SR.

Mr. Thomas Lasbury, Sr. in whose memory this article appears, was born in Kensington, England, June 8, 1832.

At the time of his death he had nearly attained the age of score-four years. May 18, 1858, while yet in England, he was united in marriage to Miss Emma Wall White. Seven years later this noble couple emigrated to America.

Coming to Pike County, Mr. Lasbury was a successful man in Griggsville, and in Pittsfield for many years. Those who knew him speak in the highest terms of his business integrity. He was a good and true citizen. Since retiring from business, Mr. Lasbury has lived in the west part of Griggsville.

Up till the death of his wife, in December 1909, the Lasbury home was a model of quiet happy home life. In his home, Mr. Lasbury was best known. There his quiet manliness made the hearthstone a cheerful place. Since the death of his wife Mr. Lasbury lived with his daughter, Mrs. Mary H. Rodway. While he has not been a well man for sometime, Mr. Lasbury was a cheerful, contented man. He was not a selfish man, but in a noble sense he spent most of his life tending strictly to his own business. If all were like him peace and harmony would generally prevail.

Thursday March 2 he appeared to feel as well as usual. He made his usual trip to town and talked in congenial and social ways to many of his dear friends. He returned to his home about 5:00P.M. and gave Mrs. Rodway a bottle of medicine from Dr. Watson, and delivered a message sent by the Dr. to her. He then inquired about the health of Mrs. Ezra Doane and family, from whom Mrs. Rodway had received a letter. He expressed his pleasure in knowing that they were well. Then there was a short struggle for breath, a bowing of the head and in less than a minute he yielded his spirit to God who gave it. Thus suddenly passed away a faithful citizen, a true man and a kind friend. It was the way he wanted to go. In him we see what the quiet service to the Episcopal Church will do to mold substantial character and a life that wears well to the end.

To mourn the loss of this good man are four children, Thomas Lasbury of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. Emma McConnell of Peoria, Illinois, Mrs. Mary H. Rodway and Mr. M.M. Lasbury of Griggsville. There are also nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Mary H. Rodway, Sunday afternoon 2:30P.M., Rev. G.E. Young officiating. Interment Griggsville Cemetery. A good man has gone to rest.

Pallbearers were Thomas Lasbury, M.M. Lasbury, C.H. McConnell, J.W. Stead, C.P. Hatch and John Lasbury, Jr.

Obituary:

W.K. RODWAY - On Wednesday, April 10, 1895 (Died 8 April 1895) we were call ed upon to lay the mortal remains of our most highly esteemed friend, W. K. Rodway, in their final resting place. The brief services at his late home were con ducted by the pastor of the Congregational church, Rev. N. L. Burton, assisted by some of his friends who sang appropriate selections. The scripture read was the 14th chapter of the Gospel by St. John, chosen for the occasion by Mr. Rodway himself after he was told by his physician that he could not recover. He said that chapter comforted him and he called the attention of his loved ones to it in hope that they would find comfort there in their coming bereavement. One looking upon the peaceful face in the casket and remembering the expressions of pain which so often were seen upon his face during the last days of the fear ful malady which terminated his mortal life, could hardly refrain from thoughts like that expressed in the 3d verse of this chapter, "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself, that where I am there ye may be also." In the weary hours of his last sickness, the lessons taught him in childhood in his Christian home came clearly to his memory, and his acceptance of the salvation of the Gospel was clear and unquestioning. In my last conversation with him he told me that he had hoped to be permitted to enter the covenant of the church of Christ before be was called away, but that it did not seem to be God's will that he should. But said he, "I have the promise of Christ, and that is enough." His final moments were so peaceful that to those who watched beside him he seemed literally to fulfill the favorite expression of the early Christians and fall asleep. After a brief service at the house the Modern Woodmen and the members of the Masonic order, each of which he was a member, conducted his remains to the cemetery, whither he was followed by a large concourse of his grief stricken friends, and with the appropriate and impressive rituals of their orders laid him to his final rest. I esteem it a privilege to supplement the eminently just statement of last week with these words of appreciation, with the hope that they may tend to comfort , those most sorely bereaved by his early death. “McCONNELL - LASBURY 1894

A very pretty home wedding took place at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. W.K. Rodway on West Quincy Avenue last Thursday afternoon, April 12, the high contracting parties being Miss Emma Lasbury, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Lasbury of this city and Mr. Charles H. McConnell, of Leaman, Ill. The happy twain entered the parlor promptly at 2 o'clock to a wedding march played by Miss Mary Rodway, niece of the bride, which was splendidly rendered. The ceremony was immediately performed by Rev. N. L. Burton of the Congregational Church.

The bride was dressed in a very pretty spring traveling suit, and the groom in usual style. After congratulations, the guests, of whom there were about forty, partook in an elegant supper in the dining room. The intervening time until the arrival of the 6:13 train was spent pleasantly in music and social converse, when they left for a few days at Decatur and other points before going to their future home at Leaman.

The bride is a popular and accomplished young lady who has alway moved in Griggsville's best society, and has friends inumerable. The groom is to be congratulated on his selection of a help-mate, and it is believed the bride is equally fortunate. Mr. McConnell is a prominent and industrious young business man of his town and highly spoken of by all who know him.

The presents were both numerous and valuable.

Mr. and Mrs. McConnell have the best wishes of all for their future happiness and prosperity.”
