Joined the army in 1907 and bought himself out in 1911 in Bermuda. He had blue eyes, brown hair and a fresh complexion as well as a couple of scars according to the records.

He emigrated to the States shortly after, in 1911 and was naturalised in Dodgeville, Wisconsin, Illinois, USA in 1918.

In the 1920, 1930 and 1940 censuses he was living at Mineral Point City, Iowa, Wisconsin with wife Mary Loretta, sons John and Ernest and daughter Dorothy

The censuses also show that he was 24 when first married, ie 1912-13. Mary Loretta was born in Wisconsin to an Austria Hungarian mother and father from Ohio. She spoke German. Click images for more info.

Joined the army 31st May 1915 and was ranked gunner. Records show he married Elsie Cross in 1921 Hitchin and had a daughter, Heather J C in 1923; and later married Dorothy V Barnes in 1935 Hitchin with a further two daughters: Margaret H in 1937 and Dorothy R in 1941.
