Ernest John Loftin

Originally had her name as Ann Johnson. However, marriage certificate seems good match and goes with birth certificate of daugher Ann Dickery - which also ties in with 1851 census, living at Maidenhead Court. Father Henry Thornton.

Death date is uncertain, this is the only death of Mary Ann Dickery a search on BMD reveals. A census return of 1881 shows a Mary Ann Dickery, born at around the right time - but not born in Ireland. There was also another Mary Dickery also not born in Ireland. Some more investigation needed to tie this up.

It is highly likely John first married Sarah Jaggers on 12 May 1828 and had at least three children between 1828 and 1831. There is a possible matching death record for Sarah Dickery in 1844 Shoreditch. John’s condition was a widower on marriage certificate to Mary Ann(a), which is added confirmation that this is likely.

No sign of children Sarah, Jane or Mary in 1841 census. Although there is a record for John, Sarah and George, plus a Robert Jaggers, probably son of Sarah from an earlier marriage who was 16 and an apprentice tailor. There is also another Dickery family in same area who are probably related, headed by Alfred born about 1791. There is a Mary staying with them who was born in 1826 (but dates may be inaccurate as this was 1841).

The 1911 census has Anne and Charles married for 31 years, which puts the year at 1880, but I can find no such marriage on record, although there is a possible match in 1892. Comparing the 1881 and 1891 census returns, it seems certain that Anne was previously married to somebody called Loftin. The only match I could find for this was a marriage between Ann Dickery and Robert William Loftin in 1868 Lambeth. However, I can find no census record of this Robert. The number of children born/died is also a mystery with 5 of seven dead by 1911. Does this include the Loftin children? If so Robert at least seemed to still be alive at this time and there were five Loftin children and three Tappins, which adds up to 8. Edith appears as Loftin in 1881 and Tappin in 1891, I believe. Can also find no record for birth of Ellen Loftin. Notably in 1881, the Loftins and the Tappins all live at 60 Frederick St.

Ann Dickery (seems to be mis-written as Dickey on marriage certificate)'s father John Dickery was a Tailor according to marriage certificate.

The Reverend Josiah Pratt, signed Ann Dickery’s christening record, was mentioned in a totally different part of my family tree in the will of Peter Guillebaud.

Mother Sarah Ann, father Benjamin a labourer, according to Surrey baptisms record on FMP and also source of birth date.

“Ada Alice FOSKER was born in 1882 at Islington, Middlesex. She was the daughter of James Charles FOSKER and Annie PULLEN. In the census of 5 April 1891 at 9 Buxton Street, Clerkenwell, Middlesex, she was listed as aged 7 born Islington, the daughter of Charles J FOSKER.2 In the census of 31 March 1901 at 19 Buxton Buildings, Clerkenwell, Middlesex, she was listed as a Machinist, aged 18 born Caledonian Road, the daughter of James Charles FOSKER.

Ada married Robert WIlliam LOFTIN on 14 October 1901 at St Andrew, Islington, Middlesex.”

Witnessed believed half-sister Edith Tappin’s marriage in 1902. See notes for mother Ann Dickery. Married Emily Mary Peggram in 1897 Islington.

Married Ernest Seabrook in 1902 Islington. It appears he died aged 28 in 1907 Islington, but could not trace her in 1911. According to census return for 42 Blundell Street either she or her brother George died before 1911 as only 2 of 7 survived until 1911, and William is clearly visible. There was a death record that seemed to match George, but none that matched Edith so I assume she was the survivor.

There seems to be some link with a Charles William Loftin, who witnessed her marriage along with a Beatrice Figg. Christmas day Five years earlier, she was witness to his marriage to Emily Mary Peggram. Both at the same parish church of St Clements, Barnsbury.
